My healing arts practice is rooted in the understanding that healing can happen through creativity, ritual, movement, sound, rest, and community connection. I approach healing as both personal and collective work, especially for people navigating oppression, disability, grief, caregiving, trauma, or isolation. Through Sounds of Kayode, I create experiences that invite people to slow down, reconnect with their bodies and breath, and access moments of grounding, release, joy, and transformation.
My work combines sound healing, circle singing, Reiki, movement, altar building, and facilitated community experiences. I often use layered vocal harmonies, percussion, looping, call-and-response, and meditative soundscapes to help create environments that feel nourishing and accessible to a wide range of people. I’m especially interested in how vibration, rhythm, and collective voice can support nervous system regulation, emotional expression, and deeper connection with ourselves and each other.
As a trained Reiki practitioner, Access Doula, and Disability Justice activist, I also center care and accessibility as part of the healing process. That means thinking intentionally about sensory needs, pacing, rest, language access, participation options, and creating spaces where people do not have to separate their identities or lived experiences from the healing experience itself.
A large part of my healing arts work is also about imagination and possibility. I believe healing spaces can help people remember their resilience, reconnect with community, and envision futures rooted in care, liberation, and interdependence. Whether through music, ritual, facilitated workshops, or collaborative gatherings, my goal is to support experiences where people feel validated, supported, and able to reconnect with their own wisdom and creativity.

Sounds of Kayode explores the intersections of healing, spirituality, and collective intention through layered musical compositions. Some pieces use drones, harmonies, interlocking rhythms, solo passages, and call-and-response to create a communal sound healing experience. Another builds on this foundation by centering affirmations for the coming year, using harmonic structures and interwoven melodies to cultivate hope and positivity. There are works that position music as a powerful vessel for emotional and energetic transformation.
Various compositions deepen this spiritual inquiry. Some serve as a musical prayer, calling spirit into closer communion, while others reflect a reverent awareness that prayers are being heard and received by a higher power. Sometimes there can be a compassionate exploration of ongoing personal and collective healing, acknowledging the presence of both grief and joy. Together, these works form a body of sound-based practice that uses music as a tool for connection, reflection, and sacred presence.

JJ Omelagah (they/them) is a Black, trans, and neurodivergent sound artist, ritualist, and community healer based in the U.S. They are the founder of Sounds of Kayode, a project at the crossroads of Disability Justice, African spiritual traditions, and collective healing through sound.
JJ is a trained Circle Sing facilitator in the lineage of Bobby McFerrin, a Reiki practitioner, and an Orisha priest . Their sound work is informed by two decades of experience in community care, access coordination, and spiritual practice.
JJ has performed at the National Queer Arts Festival, San Francisco Pride, San Francisco Women Against Rape, and The National Day of Forgiveness. They have also led sound-based healing spaces in collaboration with social justice and arts organizations across the country.
Their sonic journey is a deliberate exploration into the realms of healing, movement, transformation, care, thoughtfulness, prayer, and playfulness. These intentions are the brushstrokes that bring thoughts and feelings to life, infusing spaces with alchemy and collectively uplifting energies. The result is not merely music but an invitation into a communal sanctuary—a space for collective healing and community building.
Their inspiration is drawn from the profound impact of fellow creative souls who stir their spirit and reshape their perceptions. They're captivated by artists who provoke a visceral need within them to create music in response. Those whose art becomes a pilgrimage, drawing them back time and again, are the kindred spirits they desire. It is the resilience of artists, their unwavering resistance, that fuels their own creative fire, reminding them of the boundless possibilities that emerge in the face of artistic expression.
In the alchemy of sound, they find purpose—a purpose to create, to share, and to contribute to the collective symphony of existence. Through these vibrations, they hope to ignite a spark within others, fostering a shared journey of discovery, healing, and joy.
